Why Josh?

Here's what I'd bring to the table.

Product Vision

Set product vision for AI Assistant platform in year one. Drew on product and founder experiences to lead product discovery, roadmap, and KPIs before handing off to dedicated PM.

First Principles

Background in Philosophy, History of Science & Math, and Psychology. Thinks from first principles when the problem calls for it. Just ships when it doesn't.

Founder Twice, Then Scaled

Built two companies from scratch. Then led platform orgs across 3 business units. Knows how to start things and scale them.

Building Multipliers

No-code Agent Builder added ~30% more builders without hiring. 2.5x'ed eval throughput by forming cross-functional team to optimize. Automated pair programming for 100+ engineers. Test quality initiative improved avg quality 40%. Builds systems and culture that multiply.

A/B Testing

Built metrics and A/B testing frameworks to optimize search experiences. Reduced time and clicks to successful outcomes. Spread experimentation culture across 3 orgs and 200+ engineers via tech talks, workshops, and baking into standard processes.

EM → Member of Technical Staff

Full-stack ownership. Will write code, design screens, define eval criteria, or partner with the teams who do it best. It's about solving the problem and collaborating with the right people to do that, not staying in a lane.

People Leadership

Managing people with empathy, intention, and a systems mindset.

Early Intervention

Recognized a talented ML manager was misaligned with her role before it became a problem. Had proactive, honest conversations about what energized her versus what her current trajectory would require from her in the future. Proposed a diagnostic: teaching a class at NYU. It confirmed her research-oriented motivation.

Guided her to a research-focused position where she thrived. Retained high-quality talent, preserved trust and psychological safety. The peer manager was thrilled. Strong ML managers are rare.

Have the uncomfortable conversation before it becomes a problem.

From Beast IC to Org-Level Force Multiplier

Recruited a prolific contractor that four other managers failed to close. Negotiated higher comp, justified with GitHub stats and cross-team impact. Then designed a deliberate growth path: 70+ pairing sessions in one year, a cross-team 'fixer' model embedding him on struggling teams, and high-impact, cross-org projects.

Successfully promoted to Senior Staff Engineer. His org-wide influence (SWE Book Club, Test Code Quality Working Group, cross-BU systems) raised the engineering bar for everyone around him.

Great individual contributors need intentional systems to scale their impact beyond what they can produce.

Hiring Systems > Individual Hires

Built structural improvements to hiring quality: behavioral interview question banks focused on judgment and ambiguity, resume name-blinding to reduce bias, and diversity-forward recruiting with videos featuring real engineers and managers.

Personally hired ~12 engineers during GenAI reorg, sourced 5 candidates into pipeline (2 became standouts). Then handed leadership of the resume screening group to a direct report, multiplying the impact.

Structural fairness improves diversity and talent quality. Hiring systems matter as much as individual hires.

The Person Behind the Work

What shapes the way I think and build.

Unconventional Foundations

Philosophy & History of Science/Math at St. John's College. Psychology at UC Berkeley. Trained to think from first principles, question assumptions, and test them.

Founder Twice Over

Built Rebound (ML-powered conversion optimization) and Argmaps (visual research platform) from zero. Knows what it takes to build something from nothing: the ambiguity, the resourcefulness, the ownership.

Growth Mindset

Went back to the front lines when coding models step-changed. What I'm learning is reshaping how I think about centralized teams: less about distributing shared code, more about maintaining the protocols and verification harnesses that ensure consistency when code gets regenerated instead of reused.

Lifelong Learning

Built a visual research platform (Argmaps) designed to show the best answers to any question, and the best evidence for and against them. A home base for lifelong learners to record and further their own learning, and collaborate with others doing the same.
